IIT Madras Campus

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), are a group of thirteen autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institutes of higher education established and declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Parliament of India. In order of establishment, they are located in Kharagpur (1950), Mumbai (1958), Chennai (1959), Kanpur (1959), Delhi (1961; as IIT 1963), Guwahati (1994), Roorkee (1847; as IIT 2001), Bhubaneswar (2008), Gandhinagar (2008), Hyderabad (2008), Patna (2008), Punjab (2008) and Rajasthan (2008). The Government of India has announced plans to add three more IITs, to be established at Indore, Mandi and Varanasi (via conversion of the IT BHU). Some IITs were established with financial assistance and technical expertise from UNESCO, Germany, the United States, and Soviet Union. Each IIT is an autonomous university, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration.
Admission to undergraduate B. Tech and integrated M. Tech programs are through IIT-JEE, the Joint Entrance Examination in which around 3,00,000 students appear annually out of which only around 5,000 get selected. Admission is very competitive, given the huge population of India.
Admission to M.Tech programmes are through GATE, Graduate Aptitude Test In Engineering with candidates having to appear for separate papers corresponding to their branches of expertise. The JOint Admission Test to M.Sc, JAM is conducted for admission to Masters programmes in General Sciences. Admission for Ph.D. program is based primarily on a personal interview, though candidates may also have to appear for written tests.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are India's premier management institutes that also conduct research and provide consultancy services in the field of management to various sectors of the Indian economy. They were created by the Indian Government[1] with the aim of identifying the brightest intellectual talent[1] available in the student community of India and training it in the best management techniques available in the world, to ultimately create a pool of elite world class managers to manage and lead the various sections of the Indian economy. IIMs play a leadership role in the nation’s managerial manpower development and carry out research in emerging areas.[1] These Institutes are recognized as premier management institutions, comparable to the best in the world for teaching, research and interaction with industries. IIMs being "Role Models" have shared knowledge and skills with other institutions to improve their quality and standards in management education. IIMs have earned an international reputation for the quality of their alumni. In order of establishment, the IIMs are located at Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore and Shillong.
The CAT conducted by the IIMs is a very competitive test conducted for admission to graduate programs in management at the seven campuses, and is usually considered one of the most competitive exams in the world, with a supposed success rate of about one in two hundred. Each institute conducts group discussions and personal interviews to evaluate the students shortlisted after the test. Some claim that since around 300,000 students compete for less than 1350 seats in the IIMs, these institutes are even more selective than all the top US business schools put together.
